The owners of this rural steading moved to the East Lothian countryside to embrace a slower pace of life and enjoy their retirement surrounded by nature. With more time to spend at home, they wanted to invest in a beautiful outdoor space that would enhance both their property and their daily lifestyle.
When we first visited the garden, the stunning surrounding views were disrupted by a sea of gravel and cars parked directly in front of the house.
To transform the setting, we reconfigured the entrance space and introduced hedging to gently redirect the driveway away from the main outlook. This allowed the garden to feel softer, calmer and far more connected to the landscape beyond.

Now, the couple can sit out on their patio surrounded by flowing, naturalistic planting that blends seamlessly into the wider countryside. A contemporary reflective pool creates a tranquil focal point — somewhere to dip their toes on warm summer days. Or watch stunning East Lothian sunsets reflected in the water, or enjoy the simple beauty of raindrops rippling across the surface.
And wondering through a rustic timber frame, the garden opens onto a generous lawn where grandchildren can run and play freely.

Outside the back door, the owners now enjoy their morning coffee and bacon rolls in their new sunny, secluded kitchen garden. Fragrant roses and herbs surround the seating area, while raised beds provide space to grow fresh fruit and vegetables for a tasty supper. They particularly enjoy being able to step outside and gather a handful of fresh herbs to throw in the cooking pot.
